We recently released the 2025 Bequest Report, which looks at the trends, behaviours and opportunities around charitable bequesting in New Zealand. Kiwis are relatively generous while alive, with 60% of New Zealanders financially contributing to a charity each year.
However, this isn’t translating into a lasting legacy – currently only 6% of New Zealand wills make provisions for charity.
Many Kiwis simply don’t think about giving when preparing a will. It is important to have more public conversations about this so it becomes normal for more Kiwis to consider a gift in their will.
There is also the opportunity to think about ‘the full family balance sheet’ when preparing a will, including non-financial assets, and a deeper meaning of legacy that can be achieved by giving with stronger connections back to the wider community.
In this video, our Head of Philanthropic Services, John Morrow shares more insights.
